Element: Line

Principle: Variety

Lucy Lewis, Lightning Seed Jar from the Americas

I liked how Lucy Lewis used a variety black and white lines within this pottery. She varied the thickness and size of each line to add and hold interest on the design. Also, I liked that she made the lines more organic and not perfectly symmetrical. You can tell that she did this by hand and is very skilled.

Element: Space

Principle: Emphasis

Keiichi Matsuo, Hakusan Porcelain from Asia

All of the jars are the same white cylinder form. Only small changes have been made by the artist by pushing in or pulling out portions of the cylinder. Therefore, I liked how the minimalist design of this pottery emphasizes the small changes in the positive and negative space that the jars take up.

Element: Texture

Principle: Pattern

Igbo Pottery from Africa

I like the texture pattern on this southern Nigerian pottery. I like how the texture pattern changes direction depending on how the artist wants you to look at certain areas. The carved lines encircle all the design details on the pot and therefore highlighting the details importance. Also, the texture probably helped with holding the vessel by adding surface that would not slip.
